Gurukul Primary School, Saweni, Lautoka was built in 1918 at the tail end of World War I particularly to educate children of indentured Indian labourers due to lack of initiative by the then Colonial Administration. The school pioneered Indian Education and maintained religious focus The first Head Teacher of Gurukul Primary was Swami Ram Manoharanand Saraswati from India. He was the initiator of the project. Gurukul Primary School is a medium mainstream multiracial rural school.
